Click the Docker Quickstart Terminal icon to start Docker on your Mac. Once you follow the GUI installation screens, you should see an icon on your Launchpad labelled Docker Quickstart Terminal. For the purpose of this example, I will be referring to installing it on Mac OS X. The installation is fairly uneventful, go to the Docker downloads page and select the installer for your desktop (Mac OS X or Windows). Kitematic is a graphical user interface (GUI) for Docker and provides an interface into Docker Hub for quick access to images that can be easily deployed into your Docker Toolbox. In Docker Toolbox, Compose is only available for Mac OS X and is used to define and run multiple containers. With this release, Docker has added tools such as Compose and Kitematic, so you don’t need to install them separately. In addition, it provides developers with a local sandbox for developing and testing Docker containers. Docker Toolbox provides an ideal platform environment to learn Docker without having to manually install and configure a virtual machine and Docker on your desktop. Docker Toolbox enables users to run Docker containers on Windows systems that fail to meet the minimum system requirements for the Docker for Windows app. With the release of Docker 1.8, Docker has replaced Boot2Docker with Docker Toolbox. Additionally, the tool sets up two networks, one of which connects the containers to the internet and one which creates secure port mapping.īoot2Docker is included in Docker Toolbox, along with the Kitematic GUI for container management, Docker Engine, Docker Machine, Docker Compose and a shell preconfigured for the Docker command-line interface. Boot2Docker-CLIĭocker created a Boot2Docker command-line tool, which downloads the Boot2Docker ISO image and automatically creates an Oracle VM VirtualBox virtual machine. Operating in production required a separate Linux host, or a third-party platform such as CoreOS, to manage and orchestrate containers. The Boot2Docker welcome screen greets users who plan to run containers on the lightweight OS.īoot2Docker was designed for Docker development only it lacked many of the capabilities of other Linux OS distributions, such as file sharing between the containers and the native host. Docker Machine does, however, let users set up a VM that runs Boot2Docker Linux. The release of Docker Machine, and the subsequent releases of native Docker applications for non-Linux OSes, have deprecated Boot2Docker-CLI. Prior to the release of Docker Machine, Boot2Docker was the only way to run Docker on Windows OSes. Docker Engine deploys and runs containers from images. The Docker Machine tool installs Docker Engine on virtual hosts. The Boot2Docker team encourages users and people in search of a way to run Docker on Microsoft Windows and Apple MacOS to use Docker Machine. Boot2Docker started up in around 5 seconds. The Boot2Docker distribution was based on Tiny Core Linux and runs completely from RAM. It was depreciated and is no longer recommended for use. Boot2Docker is a minimalist Linux distribution with the sole purpose to run Docker containers.
